Bali is an island, not a city: its best-known temples and rice terraces sit in the hills around and beyond Ubud, its beaches and sea temples along the south and west coasts. A walking-first base is one whose own streets or shoreline you enjoy on foot, with rides planned for the rest.

How close the 25 catalog places are from each base

We measured the straight-line distance from each base to all 25 Bali places in the CityWalk Plan catalog, and added Nusa Dua for comparison.

Method: catalog proximity in a straight line. These are straight-line distances from OpenStreetMap neighbourhood centres to all 25 places in our Bali catalog, measured 13 October 2026. For central Ubud the point is Ubud Palace, which is itself one of the 25 places and so counts in its own row; the Ubud Market distance in the walking test is also from OpenStreetMap. For the other bases, the center of the OpenStreetMap village area (for Nusa Dua, its area point). Our catalog position for Petitenget Temple was about 1 km from the temple in OpenStreetMap, so we used the OpenStreetMap position. Straight lines are not walking distances, and we did not measure pavements, traffic or shade.

The places do not cluster around one town. Central Ubud is the nearest of our five bases to 16 of the 25, from Ubud Palace itself to Amed Beach (45.8 km). The coastal bases split the other nine.

Central Ubud's lead is small but real: Goa Gajah and the Bali Swing sit just beyond 3 km. The beach bases look weaker in the table than they would from a beachfront hotel, because the OpenStreetMap centers of Seminyak and Canggu are inland. Sleep near the sand and the beach is at your door, but the next sight is still a ride.

Central Ubud

The Indonesia Travel guide to Ubud, published by Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism, places Ubud in central Bali, says the town is small enough to explore on foot and warns that the terrain is hilly. From Ubud Palace, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is 1.2 km and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary 1.4 km away. The hill sights are rides, but shorter ones than from the coast.

Fits: culture-first trips, early walkers.

Skip it if: beach time is the point; Sanur Beach, the nearest beach in our catalog, is 20.2 km away.

Sanur

Sanur is on the coast east of Denpasar. The Indonesia Travel page on Sanur Beach describes calm waves and a long pedestrian path along the shore, used for cycling and jogging. Sanur Beach is 0.9 km from Sanur's center point; nothing else on our list is within 10 km.

Fits: slow trips, walkers who want a long shoreline route every morning.

Skip it if: temples and rice terraces are the point; Ubud Palace is 20.9 km away.

Seminyak

The Indonesia Travel guide to Seminyak calls it an upmarket coastal area just north of Legian and Kuta, more laid-back than Kuta, and says walking is the best way to explore it. The same page warns that traffic in this part of the west-coast conurbation can get very congested. Seminyak Beach (1.7 km) and Petitenget Temple (1.8 km) are the catalog places within 3 km.

Fits: beach stays with evenings on foot, short trips that start or end at the airport.

Skip it if: you want temples and rice terraces near your door.

Canggu

The Indonesia Travel page on Canggu Beach describes a wide black-sand surf beach with rice paddies behind it, and advises hiring your own car or arranging a hotel pickup from the airport. Canggu Beach is 2.6 km from the inland village point we used, and Tanah Lot 6.6 km.

Fits: surfers, beach-and-café days, longer stays with a driver for outings.

Skip it if: you want to walk to sights rather than to the beach.

Kuta

Kuta's point is 2.8 km from Ngurah Rai International Airport in a straight line, the closest of our five bases. The Indonesia Travel page on Kuta Beach describes a beach resort for any budget that you can get around on foot, with loud nightlife after dark, and advises against bringing a car because parking is very tight. Kuta Beach is 1.2 km from the point, Jimbaran Bay 4.8 km.

Fits: first and last nights, beach and nightlife.

Skip it if: you want quiet evenings.

A central Ubud walking test

Start at Ubud Palace and visit Ubud Market, about 150 m away in a straight line, which the official Ubud guide recommends for handicrafts. Then head south to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. On another day, go north-west to the Campuhan Ridge Walk, which the same guide suggests for an afternoon when the weather is cool. If both outings feel easy, central Ubud is a walking base for you.

The rides you will take from any base

No base we measured has more than 7 of the 25 places within 10 km. Group the rest by direction and give each group its own day:

Ubud Palace and Sanur's point are 20.9 km apart in a straight line. Our rule of thumb: if your list leans to temples and rice terraces, sleep in Ubud for those nights; if it leans to beaches and Uluwatu, sleep on the south coast; if it holds both, split the stay rather than commuting that distance each way.

Arrival reality

The table gives straight-line distances from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Indonesia Travel gives road times for two bases: 30 to 45 minutes to Sanur by taxi or online transportation, depending on traffic, and 45 minutes to Canggu Beach by car. For Ubud, its guide notes that prepaid cabs from the airport can be expensive.

Which Bali should be outside your door?

Then plan the rides as whole days. If you are unsure how many kilometers a day of temple steps and beach paths holds, read how far to walk in a day, and our practical city-walking tips on shoes and pacing.

Check the block before you book

Look at the last few hundred meters. Our figures say nothing about pavements, traffic, shade or lighting. Before you book, open street-level imagery for the stretch between the property and the beach path, market or main road you plan to walk, and ask how close a car can drop you.

In Ubud, ask about slopes and steps. The official Ubud guide flags hilly terrain and suggests asking locals which places are easier on foot.

FAQ

Is Bali walkable?

Not as a whole. For the 25 Bali places in our catalog, the median place is more than 20 km in a straight line from every base we checked. Individual areas are another matter: the official Indonesia Travel guide says Ubud is small enough to explore on foot, and Sanur has a long beachfront path.

What is the best area to stay in Bali for walking?

Central Ubud or Sanur. Central Ubud has three of the 25 catalog places within 1.5 km of Ubud Palace in a straight line, the palace itself included, more than any other base we measured. Sanur has a long beachfront path, but only one catalog place, Sanur Beach, within 10 km.

Is Seminyak or Ubud better for walking?

Ubud, if you want to walk to sights: three catalog places, the palace included, are within 1.5 km of Ubud Palace, none within 1.5 km of Seminyak's center point. Seminyak is better for beach walks and is 6.3 km from the airport in a straight line, against 28.6 km for Ubud Palace.

Is Kuta or Nusa Dua better if you want to walk?

Kuta, on our numbers: five catalog places are within 10 km of Kuta's point, including Kuta Beach at 1.2 km. Only Jimbaran Bay is within 10 km of the Nusa Dua point. We did not measure walking within Nusa Dua itself.

Sources and checking notes

Indonesia Travel pages from Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism support the area descriptions and road times; all were opened on October 13, 2026, and none carries a publication date. Distances are straight lines from OpenStreetMap points, not walking routes. Area recommendations reflect our walking-first editorial judgment; verify current transport, rules and lodging details before you book. This article was drafted with AI assistance from our catalog data; the figures were checked against the catalog and the sources linked above.
