CityWalk Plan vs GPSmyCity, VoiceMap, Wanderlog and Google Maps

Facts checked: 7 October 2026

The short answer

These five tools solve different parts of a city walk, so the right one depends on what you want help with.

They also combine well: for example, plan the days in CityWalk Plan, then open each day in Google Maps or Apple Maps for walking directions.

Tool by tool

CityWalk Plan

Pick a city, 1–5 days and a pace (Easy, Balanced or Packed). The planner groups real places by neighborhood into days, which you can edit, reorder, share as a link, or export as PDF, plain text, GPX or KML. Places are checked against Wikipedia, Wikidata and OpenStreetMap, and itineraries are not generated by an AI model. It is available in 9 languages and also through a free MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT.

Limits: map lines are straight lines between stops, not street routes, and there are no walking times. Opening hours are not checked live. There is no offline mode, audio narration or GPS turn-by-turn navigation; open each day in Google Maps or Apple Maps for directions.

GPSmyCity

An app of pre-written self-guided walks, with travel articles. The free app shows each walk's attractions and offline city maps; walk route maps, voice-guided directions and building your own walks need a paid upgrade.

Better than CityWalk Plan for: walking without data, turn-by-turn directions, and many more cities (1,800+).

VoiceMap

Audio walking tours made by historians, novelists, guides, podcasters and locals. Narration starts automatically as GPS detects where you are, and downloaded tours work offline. Tours are bought individually or through bundles and passes, and you keep them once bought.

Better than CityWalk Plan for: narrated commentary, hands-free guidance and offline use.

Wanderlog

A general trip planner: itineraries, flight and hotel reservations (including forwarded confirmation emails), budgets and real-time collaboration. You choose the places; it can optimise the order, suggest places through a ChatGPT-powered assistant, and create an itinerary from a pasted link.

Better than CityWalk Plan for: whole-trip organisation, group planning and offline access to your plan.

Google Maps (Lists and My Maps)

Save places to lists in Google Maps, or build a custom map with layers in My Maps and view it in the Google Maps app. It does not divide places into days for you.

Better than CityWalk Plan for: street-level walking directions with spoken navigation, and a database of over 250 million businesses and places. Downloaded areas work offline, but walking directions do not.

How to choose

  1. No mobile data on the trip? Download a GPSmyCity walk or a VoiceMap tour before you go. With CityWalk Plan, export a PDF.
  2. Want stories while you walk? VoiceMap.
  3. Want the sights sorted into days for you? CityWalk Plan.
  4. Already have a list of places? Google Maps Lists or My Maps, or Wanderlog for route optimisation.
  5. Planning flights, hotels and several cities together? Wanderlog.
  6. Prefer not to create an account? CityWalk Plan needs none; VoiceMap needs one to buy tours, and Google Maps needs one to save places.
